Night work has been taking place along the stretch of motorway between Clayton Brook and Walton Summit this week, with crews usually arriving on site at 10pm and working under giant spotlights until around 3.30am.

For those living on the estate around Clayton Brook Road – just metres away from the motorway – the sounds of sawing, drilling and hammering, and the constant hum of generators, is keeping them awake at night.

After two nights without sleep, one infuriated resident who lives just 30 metres (100ft) from the carriageway shared footage of the work taking place from his bedroom window.

Posting the video on Facebook, the man said: “Here we go again, 10pm and they start cutting, strimming, leaf blowing for the second night in a row. Was till 3am last night.

"Only just getting started here too, loads more of them with power tools running now.

"Just concerned for the people in surrounding houses with young kids. I’ll manage, it’s just irritating.”

Speaking to the Post today, he said he only managed a couple of hours sleep before having to get up for work at 7am.

"I did honestly feel sorry for the families with kids on my row,” he added, “it’s just too hot to keep the windows closed during the heatwave, but the noise is horrendous.”

Another resident, Sophia Whiting, took to Facebook at 3am on Tuesday night wondering why someone was cutting the grass in the middle of the night.

“Who the hell is cutting their grass or god knows what u are doing at 3am!!?? Really!??,” she said, adding, “don’t know what else it could be. Had to shut my window and my rooms boiling.”

What work is taking place? And why at night?

Andrew Olive, National Highways’ Service Delivery Manager for the North, said: “The work along this section of the M65 is cyclic maintenance. This type of maintenance is performed in the most part to ensure the safety of those travelling on our network.

“Cyclic maintenance is programmed to happen during the year to ensure that the road is kept in a safe and serviceable condition.

"These works will often happen overnight for the safety of workers and to reduce disruption for road users.

“These works are due to be completed by the end of tomorrow night (Friday, August 12).”
