M61 reopens following serious collision

The M61 has reopened near Chorley following a serious collision earlier today.

The motorway was closed southbound between junctions 8 (Bolton North) and 6 (Horwich) due to an incident, close to Rivington Services, at around 1pm.

A Highways England spokesman said earlier that Lancashire Police collision investigation work was being 'undertaken' and the closure was expected to be in place for several hours."

Emergency services remained at the scene following the crash, in which a vehicle is believed to have overturned.

Police officers from Lancashire Police and Greater Manchester Police attended the incident along with North West Ambulance Service paramedics. An air ambulance was also spotted in a nearby field earlier.

All trapped traffic was released through the services.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: "Further to our earlier posts, the M61 southbound has fully reopened following a serious road traffic collision close to junction 8. Thank you for your patience."
