The reopening has led to heavy congestion on the approach to the M55, with delays back to the M6 northbound at junction 31 (Preston, A59).

The lengthy closure was due to road accident officers having to wait until sunrise to begin their investigation. The re-opening of the motorway was also hampered by a fuel spillage and debris on the carriageway.

Highways said it expects the congestion to clear by 3pm.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the fatal crash. Both remain in custody this morning.
