The link road towards Walton Summit (Tramway Lane) was closed in both directions at junction 2 (Brindle, M61) whilst emergency services dealt with the aftermath of the crash.

An ambulance service spokesman said: "We were called at 10.47am to reports of a road traffic collision.

"We sent two ambulances, an advanced paramedic and bronze officer and assessed five patients at scene who were discharged.

"No casualties were transported to hospital."

Lancashire Police suggested that the crash was due to the poor weather and has urged people to "drive according to the conditions".
