Traffic officers have closed the third lane on the M6 northbound between junctions 26 (Orrell Interchange, M58) and 27 (Standish, Parbold, A5209) after a crash at around 9am.

It has led to significant delays between Standish and Wigan, with Highways warning that the lane closure could remain in place until 10am.

Highways maintenance crews are at the scene and recovery is being arranged.

It adds to traffic problems from earlier this morning, when a lane closure was put in place due to pothole repairs on the same stretch of carriageway. This work was completed by 9.10am and is not believed to be related to the crash.

It is not known whether anyone has been injured in the accident at this stage.

North West Ambulance Service has been approached for comment.
