Video footage and photos taken by residents showed a stream of water flowing down the street, flooding the road and nearby driveways.

A spokesman said: "Following a burst water main on Fishergate Hill, some customers in your area are experiencing discolored water.

"Discoloration can range from a light, straw-yellow colour, to a dark brown and is caused by a disturbance of settled deposits in the main, made up of naturally occurring metals and minerals.

"We know it doesn’t look nice but don’t worry, it’s unlikely to be harmful and will settle down again with time.

Engineers have visited the scene but it is not yet known when the pipe will be fixed.
