United Utilities said locals have been experiencing discolored tap water as a result of the pipe breaking, but have reassured them "it’s unlikely to be harmful".

A spokesman said: "Following a burst water main on Fishergate Hill, some customers in your area are experiencing discolored water.

"Discoloration can range from a light, straw-yellow colour, to a dark brown and is caused by a disturbance of settled deposits in the main, made up of naturally occurring metals and minerals.

"We know it doesn’t look nice but don’t worry, it’s unlikely to be harmful and will settle down again with time.
