Three students were injured, including a 16-year-old boy who was taken to hospital in a serious condition. Lancashire Police said the teenager remains in hospital.

Two other boys, aged 17 and 16, suffered minor injuries in Monday’s collision which saw emergency services - including the air ambulance - rush to the scene at around 11.25am. One of the passengers in the Volkswagen Polo also sustained minor injuries.

Two other drivers traced

The force said the driver of the Polo and two other drivers, who were in the area around the time of the collision, had been ‘traced’ and spoken to. The two other vehicles were confirmed as a grey Vauxhall Astra and a blue Volkswagen Polo.

Lancashire Police were approached for an update on Friday. They were asked whether the two other drivers were being treated as witnesses or were suspected of being involved in the collision.

The force said “an investigation into what happened and what involvement anyone had is ongoing”.

“An investigation is in it’s very early stages, and we are appealing for witnesses and footage that can assist us,” said a police spokesperson.

“If you were in the area and saw the pedestrians or any of the three vehicles, or if you have dashcam of them before or after the collision, or that captures the collision itself, please do the responsible thing and get in touch.

“We know that this will be concerning to hear about and is something that will have been spoken about in the local community. We want to remind you that this collision has left a 16-year-old boy seriously injured and involves real people.

“If you have mobile phone footage, please send it to us through the appropriate channels.

“We are also asking people to refrain from speculating online and allow our officers to carry out a full and thorough investigation appropriately.

“If you can assist us in any way, please call 101 or email [email protected] quoting log 0453 of October 12.”
