New rules for major road in Burnley as 'red route clearway' to be introduced
Vehicles are to be banned from pulling up on a major route in Burnley.
Lancashire County Council intends to turn part of the A679 Accrington Road in Hapton into a so-called ‘red route clearway’.
The restriction - which will prevent motorists from stopping and waiting for any length of time - will apply between the junction with Manchester Road/Hameldon Road and the roundabout at junction 9 of the M65, the Burnley West turn-off.
The authority says the change is needed “in the interest of providing a safe, accessible route for all vehicles and pedestrians and improved bus journey time[s]”. It is being delivered as part of a planning agreement relating to new housing in the area.
Buses and taxis will be exempt from the new rules in order to allow passengers on and off and in and out.
Other exemptions include the emergency services, maintenance and utility vehicles and Royal Mail vans delivering or collecting post.
Highways bosses have launched a public consultation into the plans. Anybody wishing to take part should email [email protected], quoting ref:LSG4\894.21542\AFR, by 13th February, or write to: The Director of Law and Governance, Lancashire County Council, PO Box 100, County Hall, Preston, PR1 0LD.
