The A59 duel carriageway, which links city commuters to Penwortham, Longton, and Southport, was down to one lane due to a lane closure, causing delays of over 30 minutes.

One commuter, Rob Randell, said on Twitter: "Surface dressing on A59 Guild Way heading out of Preston is causing chaos! My five minute journey has taken 35 minutes so far."

Tom Pattinson said: "Traffic was starting to build at 3.30pm when I drove down the A582 past Booths. Glad I missed it in rush hour!"

The delay is the latest to frustrate passengers in the Preston area. Just last night saw passengers stuck in crawling traffic on the M55 eastbound due to Highways England repainting road markings.
