Both carriageways are now open, but one lane on either side will remain closed until 6am on Sunday for works on the central reservation between junctions 5 and 6 at Blackburn.
It is believed that the lorry smashed through the barrier and ended up on the other side of the motorway.
North West Motorway Police tweeted: "There several points where the central barrier has been damaged covering a 2km distance, this requires a large number of cones which Highways England contractors are bringing to scene."
