The crash led to congestion around the Bamber Bridge and Clayton-le-Woods area as drivers were diverted along the A6.
“Just took an hour to get round the roundabout,” said one motorist.
Alternative Routes
Depending on your direction of travel, you can use the following local bypass routes to avoid the closure:
Northbound
Traffic can exit early at Junction 8 (Chorley) and use the A6 northbound to travel toward Preston or to link up with the M65.
Southbound / From the M65
Use the M6 or the A6 southbound via Bamber Bridge to bypass the closed section and rejoin the M61 further down at Junction 8.
