A memorial football competition is being in memory of a UCLan student who died of lymphoma.

Friends will gather today to remember Chris Curwen, who played for UCLan FC during his time at university before he died in 2010 at the age of 23.

This will be the fourth year in a row that the tournament has been held and each year it has raised money for charity.

Organisers are hoping to raise £2,500 this year with the money going to The Christie NHS Foundation Trust which was chosen by Chris’ mum Karen Bradley. The tournament will take place at Myerscough College, where Chris attended, and will feature a UCLan Old Boys XI, the current UCLan football team and Wyre Villa.

Friend Yusuff Kaffo, who helps organise the tournament, said: “I hope it’s bigger than last year and we raise as much money as we can.

“We’re already halfway there as we’ve got more teams entering the competition and hopefully, we can raise more money than last year.

“When we started it was just a game between some of the Old Boys and one of the teams currently at UCLan and now there are six teams taking part each year.”
