The surprising reason Kingsfold Library had to urgently close - and when it will reopen

The building dates back to 1968.

Kingfold Library has had to unexpectedly closed this week - due to an unusual problem.

On Monday, bosses at the Hawsbury Drive venue announced that ‘urgent work’ was required on the building, redirecting users to Lostock Hall library instead.

Now the cause of the issue and the reopening date can be revealed.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council told the Post: "We hope to reopen the library next week, subject to the completion of ongoing works.

"A beetle infestation was identified in a roof space and adjoining back-office area of the building, which are not areas used by the public.

"We took the precautionary decision to close the library so it could be fully resolved before there was any risk of it spreading any further. Specialist contractors have carried out treatment works and are returning to complete extra preventative measures, with a deep clean also planned. If everything progresses as expected, we may be able to reopen on Saturday. If not, we expect to reopen next week.

"There was no risk to visitors who had previously visited the library. We acted quickly to address the issue at an early stage. Our priority has been to resolve the issue safely and minimise disruption for library users."

Built in 1968, Kingsfold Library serves as a vital community hub providing lending services, local history resources, and event spaces . It is an official Lancashire County Council Warm and Welcome Space, offering free hot drinks, seating, Wi-Fi, computer access, and device charging.
