When the guest speaker failed to arrive at Garstang Historical Society meeting last week fast-thinking organisers decided to call on one of their own members who told of his involvement in one of Britain’s most notorious multiple murder cases.

On October 16, 1965, Society member Bob Spiers, was a young policeman searching the Saddleworth moors as part of the search for the bodies of the victims of the “Moors murderers.”

In a day that shook the world, Bob discovered the body of the youngest victim Lesley Ann Downey, 10, which subsequently was a vital part of the investigation leading to the capture of Ian Brady and his accomplice, Myra Hindle.

The next meeting of Garstang Historical Society will be a talk by Paul Smith entitled: “Into Battle, the Great War of 1914 - 1918.”

It will be held at Garstang United Reformed Church on November 12 at 7.30pm.
