Coun Mick Titherington will be replaced by colleague John Rainsbury from Tuesday.

Coun Titherington’s mayoralty has taken him to more than 200 engagements with Mayoress Carole, getting involved in everything from sword fighting and drum playing (at this month’s Commonwealth celebration) to celebrating residents’ 100th birthdays and hosting an Alternative Grand National for charity, the council said.

He said: “We’ve had a phenomenal year and the experience of a lifetime.

“We have met some remarkable people doing marvellous and inspirational things.

“Wherever we’ve been, we have been received with warmth and kindness. We have seen first-hand what makes South Ribble a wonderful place to live – there are so many people doing good work.

“The whole year has been one long highlight but the trip in the Popemobile on a glorious summer’s day at the 2017 Leyland Festival with our grandchildren was a magical moment.

“We want to express our heartfelt thanks to all those who have supported us throughout the year.”

Coun Titherington, a councillor for 13 years, said he is now looking forward to continuing to represent residents in his Broadfield ward.

During his year in office, the Mayor has raised several thousands of pounds for his chosen charities, St Catherine’s Hospice, Heartbeat (North West) and Lancaster University’s Defying Dementia campaign.
