The Star understands an Austrian official watched the big forward in action against Brentford last weekend.

The representative also travelled to South Yorkshire to check out Bees midfielder Konstantin Kerschbaumer, who was taken off early on as part of a tactical reshuffle after Yoann Barbet’s red card.

Since arriving on a free transfer from Rapid Vienna in July 2013, Nuhiu has netted 23 goals in 80 Owls starts.

He has featured prominently under Carlos Carvalhal, clocking up 33 appearances this season, hitting four goals.

Nuhiu’s hard-working, impressive performances against promotion rivals Burnley and Birmingham City helped Carvalhal’s men pick up four points.

The 26-year-old is of Albanian origin but has represented Austria at Under-21 level, although he is still waiting to receive a full call-up.

Speaking last November, Nuhiu said he had not ruled out gatecrashing this summer’s European Championships in France.

“I played for the Under-21s in Austria and did very well,” he said. “Of course, I would like to a call-up to the full international team. I can help the Austrian national team.”

Austria have yet to name their squad for friendlies against Albania and Turkey next month.
