Chorley Council has hired a different security company to take care of Astley Park after a security dog allegedly attacked a woman and her dog in the park this week.

Councillor Alistair Bradley, leader of the council, said he took action as soon as he heard about the alleged incident on Monday evening.

He said: “I immediately asked officers to investigate what had happened and to ensure that the dog concerned was removed from site straightaway, pending the outcome of our enquiries.

“We’ve since had some conflicting accounts of what happened so while we establish the facts we’ve changed our arrangements and are now using a different security company and no guard dogs will be on site.

“My main concern was people saying they don’t feel safe in the park so hopefully the action we have taken will reassure people the park is an enjoyable place to relax on a summer’s evening.”

Astley Park is 12 hectares of parkland and woodland close to the centre of the town, and includes historic house Astley Hall.

Reports were posted on social media about the ‘horrific attack’ in the park, with some people claiming they had seen what happened.

But the leader said the council are particularly keen to speak with the owner of the dog involved, who has not yet made contact with them or made a complaint.

He is also calling for anybody else who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.
