Peter Ward, who won an MBE for his work on the 21-mile wheel, addressed the latest full council meeting, saying he wanted to keep the greenway “as it is.”

He asked Coun Peter Rankin to submit a notice to the council, to do “all within its power” to preserve the features of the Guild Wheel.

He said Sir Tom Finney had supported it, and said: “What do you think Sir Tom would think now, if only a few years later some would be hell-bent on greatly undermining the Guild Wheel.”

The notice he asked the leader to submit said: “It is not acceptable that eight, and possibly more, new developments and their access roads are turning parts of the Guild Wheel into busy roads with cyclists and pedestrians thrown together with heavy traffic, including lorries.”
Coun Rankin said he supported the Guild Wheel, which he described as “very, very important”.

He said: “It is important to understand that the land in North and North West Preston has been allocated for housing development for six or seven years.

“These housing developments are very important to Preston in terms of the City Deal.

“The Guild Wheel is a crucial part of these developments.

“There’s money coming in for cycle ways, mainly in the north west of Preston and I‘m convinced it will enhance cycling for everybody in Preston.

“Make no mistake, the Guild Wheel is important for us and from a personal point of view, it’s very important to me.”
