Preston station entrance among Britain's 'worst' buildings

Observers had described the new build - updating the Butler Street entrance - as an "eyesore", "hideous" and "planning gone mad".

And having been nominated for the Carbuncle Cup 2017, it has now been confirmed within a six-strong shortlist to be named Britain's worst building.

The winner will be announced on Wednesday, September 6.

Steve Webberley, who submitted the nomination, says the new structure is a "deadening cake tin slapped on (the) side" of the grade II listed building.

Operator Virgin Trains has said the Butler Street entrance is a “contrasting structure to create a more modern and passenger friendly environment”.

The Carbuncle Cup is run by BD Online. A statement said: "Carbuncle Cup contenders suffer from a range of sins including gross over-development, eye popping cladding, overbearing massing, a gross disregard for context, incoherent form, overblown ‘statement’ buildings, weak planning and the just plain, cheap and nasty."
