Giving evidence at Preston Crown Court this morning, PC Grundy told the hearing that John Stephen Green, 65, had used the words to him after his mother Bernadette had died at her home in Inkerman Street, Ashton-on-Ribble, Preston.

“He didn’t appear to be upset,” said PC Grundy. “He was pragmatic in his approach to it - practical about what actually happened.”

He added: “He [Stephen] stated that he didn’t attempt resuscitation as there was nothing that he could do.”

“I was happy that I couldn’t see any signs of violence,” said PC Grundy.

Green, 65, of Inkerman Street, is accused of murdering his mother Bernadette, 88, in May this year.

Her severely emaciated body, showing what a pathologist described as signs of severe neglect, was found at the home they shared.

He denies murder and the trial continues.
