Jitendra Panchal, who runs Jit’s Plaice, in Ripon Street, will be among almost 30 stallholders whose food is suitable for people with a gluten intolerance.

Jit, who makes and serves a variety of gluten free fried foods including battered fish and pakoras, is careful to ensure his food is ‘safe’ for coeliacs and gluten avoiders – and will be frying them fresh at the Darwen event.

The gluten free food fair, organised jointly by the Preston and East Lancashire groups of national charity Coeliac UK, takes place at Darwen Vale High School on Saturday April 1.

Stallholders will be selling everything from gluten free pasta to pies, beer to brownies - and lots more in between.

This year’s gluten free food fair follows a very successful event in Samlesbury hosted by the two groups in April 2016.

Keen to find a bigger venue that could better accommodate the anticipated crowds for the 2017 food fair, the groups booked the sports hall at Darwen Vale High School.

Anna Reid-Strang, group organiser for the Preston Coeliac UK, said: “Darwen Vale is a great venue with fantastic facilities. It has allowed us to add more stallholders than we had last year, plus there will be much more space for people to walk around. We’ve added a seating area too for people to have a drink and feast on what they buy from our stallholders. And I’m pleased to say we will have representatives of Coeliac UK on hand once again to offer advice on living gluten free.”

Among the stallholders will be local producers bringing gluten free cookies, cupcakes, chutneys and sauces, as well as bigger brands selling bread, cereal and baking mixes. There will also be freshly made gluten free fish and chips.
