Power cut hits Preston graduation ceremony

Businesses and major buildings in Preston were hit by a power cut today which interrupted a graduation ceremony.

UCLan students attending a graduation ceremony at Preston Guild Hall were among those affected - as the building was evacuated when alarms went off.

Russell Hogarth, a University Honorary Fellow and Community Ambassador tweeted: "Congratulations @UCLan staff for successfully getting though this morning's celebrations after the fire alarm."

He added: "Thankfully we all got back inside to see the rest of the students graduate."

There were also reports that the Fishergate Centre and other shops were evacuated

A spokesperson for Electricity North West said: “An underground cable fault caused the loss of power to 321 customers in Preston at 12.10pm.

"Engineers quickly arrived onsite and restored power to 93 customers within half an hour and the remaining 228 customers at 1.55pm.
