Coun Alistair Bradley and Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP visited the burnt site on Saturday morning to get a greater understanding of what recovery work will need to take place when the blaze is extinguished.

Coun Bradley said: “It was very helpful to take a closer look at the site and see the devastation that has been caused and speak to those who have been working tirelessly to keep the fire under control and stop it spreading further.

"Having seen it at first hand I have every respect for those that have been working in very difficult conditions and I thanked the fire service, both local firefighters and those from further afield, on behalf of residents for all the hard work they have put in."

He added: "The biggest thing that struck me is how quiet it was – usually you’d hear birds singing and lots of wildlife but that has all gone and it will take some time before nature is able to regenerate itself.

“On that note I’d just like to reiterate the message for people to stay away from the area while the fire is extinguished and for people to take care if they are out on moorland because the fire service has enough to do without tending to other moorland fires.”

Sir Lindsay took to social media to praise those fighting the blaze.

He said: "This morning I visited Winter Hill to see the full impact of the fire, and i was able to thank those who have worked so hard over the last two weeks."
