Preston pensioner households told to check whether they are entitled to £100 cost-of-living payment

Pensioner households in Preston are being urged to check whether they are eligible for a new scheme under which they could be given £100 to help with the cost of food and fuel.

The payment is available to those pensioners who receive a reduction on their council tax bills - known as Council Tax Support - but are not getting the separate Pension Credit benefit.

Pension Credit tops up weekly incomes for pensioners to £227.10 for single people and £346.60 for couples.

The £100 on offer to those who fall into the entitled group is part of a package of cost-of-living support measures developed by Preston City Council. It was introduced last October and is designed to ensure the city’s most vulnerable residents can access help with essential expenses. The funding is available only to those living in the local authority's patch.

Coun Peter Kelly, cabinet member for communities at Preston City Council, said: “We recognise the rising financial pressures facing many older residents, and this support has been designed to offer quick and meaningful relief.”

Eligible residents can submit their application using an online form in the city council’s website.. Applications may also be completed by someone else on the applicant’s behalf, provided the bank details submitted belong to the pensioner receiving the support.

Preston City Council says it is encouraging applications from anyone who believes they may qualify. For more information and to apply, visit: https://www.preston.gov.uk/article/11668/Cost-of-Living-Targeted-Support
