The accommodation block is intended to 'complement' the existing accommodation blocks at the Kirkham Road prison, which has an operational capacity of 657 inmates.

As part of the application's planning statement, it says: "The proposed development at HMP Kirkham is to support a wider Prison Estate initiative to provide a number of appropriately designed independent living places, this development will include two rooms for those with low mobility issues. On completion, it will provide a normalising environment, in preparation for those individuals near to release.

"These developments for Category D prisoners in the prison estate will enable for the timely movement of offenders from the higher category prisons. The proposed scheme represents an enhancement of the Kirkham Prison facilities, as part of a comprehensive, long term strategy for the site, which is currently in need of improvement."

A spokesman for the Prison Service said: "This new block is part of wider plans to create more safe, modern and decent accommodation for prisoners.”

The spokesman added that while the planning application summary sets out most of the details planned for the site, the Prison Service will be announcing more in due course.
