First look at Leyland's 32 brand-new council houses in town centre ready to rent this year

All 32 of the new council homes will be reserved for local people, say the Council, and will be ready to rent this year.

Councillors have shared a sneak preview of Leyland’s new council housing in the town centre.

A total of 32 new homes are being built in Quinn Street, off Hough Lane - one of the key developments of the Leyland Town Deal project.

A mix of 1,2 and 3 bed homes, they will be owned and operated by South Ribble Borough Council (SRBC), and will be available to rent later this year.

On-site pictures and drone footage from contractors, Tyson Construction (see our video player), capture the progress of works and how the new homes will look when completed.

Leyland Town Deal

The Town Deal was hailed as “a once in a generation investment” when SRBC secured a whopping £25 million in Government funding in 2022.

With the Council contributing an additional £9 million, a total of £34 million was earmarked for improvements in Leyland town centre.

The proposals focus around three main projects - a revamped Market Hall and new market square, Northworks (a new business hub and offices) and the Quinn Street Housing Project.

The Council said the multi-million pound investment will “make sure Leyland can continue to remain as a thriving, lively and successful town for generations to come.”

New council homes

It’s been four years since the funding was approved and the first phase of the Town Deal - the Quinn Street Housing Project - is progressing ‘at pace’, say SRBC.

“You will need to demonstrate that you already live in Leyland to qualify for one of these fabulous new homes,” said Council leader Matthew Tomlinson, who visited the site on Tuesday (April 14).

He said: “I was given a sneak preview of the new housing being delivered as a part of the Leyland Town Deal project.

“Built by a local firm, Tyson’s, using local workers and the local supply chain, these 1,2 & 3 bed homes will be available to rent later this year.

“They feature solar panels, air source heat pumps and EV charging points. I’m proud that my fellow South Ribble Labour Councillors have taken the decision not to sell these houses to the private sector, but to keep them as council houses.

“As we have with other Council developments, these homes will be reserved for local people. You will need to demonstrate that you already live in Leyland to qualify for one of these fabulous new homes.”

Coun Matthew Tomlinson said details on how to apply for one of the new homes will be announced later in the year.
