Police called after youth seen with gun in park

There was a large police prescence in Preston's Avenham Park after a teenager was spotted with a gun.

Police received a call from an anxious cyclist around 3.30pm this afternoon and a number of officers made their way to the park.

It transpired that the firearm was in fact a BB gun, in the possession of a 17-year-old boy.

Police say any risk to the public was minimal.

Inspector Phil Broughton said: “The youth was showing this gun to his friends and a passer by saw it and became concerned, but we want to allay any public fears.

“They may have seen a large police presence in the area but there is no need for anyone to be concerned.”
