Preston entertainer's fancy dress and tribute night will thank 170 NHS workers for their sacrifices

Former clubland singer and author Tony Slater is organising a special tribute night for NHS workers in recognition of the tremendous work and sacrifices they have made during the coronavirus crisis.

Two nurses are helping the pensioner to make the tough decision of which workers to invite.

It is understood health workers from different fields, such as theatre, district nurses, porters and the ambulance service will be invited, with the bulk of the

invitations going to frontline services.

The event is expected to take place at the Preston Grasshoppers RFC Social Club on Friday September 18.

Staff will be treated to entertainment from a surprise tribute act and a Radio Manchester DJ.

Tony, of Garstang Road, Fulwood, Preston, said: "Unfortunately there are going to be a lot of disappointed very worthy people because I can't accommodate everyone, but the feed back I am getting is enormous excitement.

"They are all angels to me and I hope people will excuse me for having to leave so many heroes out.

"This is just a thank you from me to some wonderful people. I admire these people more than I can ever put into words, and i think it will be a very emotional night as well as a terrific party atmosphere.

"I am extremely fortunate in that so far, none of my friends or family have been affected by coronavirus."

Businessman Tony was a popular clubland star in the 1960s and 1970s, and one hit reached number 6 in Spain.

He started his musical career at the old Preston Palace, sharing the stage with Shirley Bassey.

He has been a prolific fund raiser for many charities, raising at least £750,000 - including a recording with PNE Players in aid of St Catherine's Hospice and Derian House.

Several local businesses have agreed to help Tony in his latest venture.

Add a Little Sparkle have promised to decorate the room for free, and the evening will be sponsored by Westhoughton DIY Group of Companies, Body Line Signs, and local businessman Wilf Boardman.

He is also appealing for raffle prizes for the guests to win.
