Staff arrived and talked to the man to help calm and reassure him.

Police officers then arrived at the scene, followed by a major police, fire and ambulance presence.

The Exchange said in a statement: "At this point we left the police to reason with the male whilst we provided other officers access to the fire escape area from the upper floor.

"With the arrival of specialist trained negotiators the incident was brought to a swift and successful conclusion.

"Once down he was attended to by members of the police and ambulance service.

"We hope that the male receives the mental health care he clearly needs and which will be made available to him.

"The response of the emergency services was determined and efficient.

"We have decided to write this post to clarify the facts as we are aware that there are already some disturbing posts circulating on social media and because mental health matters more so than ever maybe in these difficult times."
