Penwortham pauses for Remembrance service

Lancashire paused for silent reflection as Remembrance Day was marked across the county.

Commemorations were scaled back this year due to the pandemic preventing large-scale gatherings.

In Penwortham, a number of people marked a socially-distanced wreath laying ceremony at the war memorial, attended by attended by local dignitaries, town council members and members of the Royal British Legion.

The Last Post was played and heads were bowed in silent contemplation for the two-minute silence at 11am on Wednesday.

Others marked the occasion with a silence on their own doorsteps.

In London, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have joined the nation in observing a two-minute silence on Armistice Day, as they marked the centenary of the burial of the Unknown Warrior.

Wearing face masks Charles and Camilla joined a socially distanced congregation at Westminster Abbey for a service marking 100 years to the day since the body of the unidentified serviceman was laid rest.

Among the guests was Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace and leading figures from the armed forces.
