The new section of road has opened in north Preston, creating a new route for people around the busy M55 junction at Broughton.

Mericourt Road is approximately 300m long and runs from Eastway to D’Urton Lane, improving access to the roundabout on James Towers Way with D’Urton Lane.

County coun Keith Iddon, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We know that this can be a busy part of the city at peak times, so this new section of road will provide better connections between Broughton and Eastway, especially helping to reduce the amount of traffic heading from Eastway to the north of Preston.

“It should also help to reduce some of the traffic on the Broughton roundabout, by reducing the need for some drivers to still go that way once Mericourt Road is open.”

The new road, named Mericourt Road, has been named in honour of the area in France where former Broughton resident James Towers gained his Victoria Cross in World War One for his heroic actions.

It was created as part of the planning permission for the neighbouring housing development at D’Urton Manor.

The work was carried out by Askam Civil Engineering, on behalf of Lancashire County Council.
