A man has died after a fire at his Burnley home last Sunday.

Police tonight named the victim of the blaze at a property in Burnley Road, Briercliffe, as 60-year-old Wayne Cunningham.

In a statement Burnley and Padiham police said that, despite the best efforts of both members of the public and medical staff, who helped to rescue Wayne from the house and give him first aid, he died on Sunday evening.

Paying tribute, Wayne’s daughter Terri said: “Let’s remember Wayne as the fun-loving crazy character he was. A loving father and grandfather. “Known for always having a laugh and making people giggle.”Det Con Katie Hunter, of Burnley CID, said: “I have been overwhelmed with the public response and their real efforts to assist during this really emotive and distressing incident. I wanted to say thank you on behalf of Burnley Police to everyone who got involved and helped. Your actions and efforts have given Wayne’s family a chance to say goodbye to him which is something that I’m sure his family will be forever grateful for. “The fire is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
