Quitting smoking is probably the most significant achievement that any smoker can achieve in their life.

They will save tens of thousands of pounds, if not hundreds of thousands, and are likely to add decades to their life.

So when I quit smoking a month ago, it felt like I’d won the lottery of life and the entire experience, although emotional, was enjoyable.

And I am looking forward to life not being the slave to an addiction to nicotine that had me wishing away my life, even on family occassions, so I could poison myself with that next cigarette.

Many will tell smokers, including professionals in the NHS, that quitting is one of the most difficult things anyone can do.

But with a technique I used developed by Allen Carr, I found the process easy and enjoyable. Allen Carr’s Easyway method has been successfully used millions of times around the world and his book, Allen Carr’s Easyway to Quit Smoking, has been published in dozens of different languages.

Rather than use the book, I decided to attend one of the North West Easyway seminars run by Mark Keen who has been helping smokers quit for 15+ years.

Mark explains: “"It is easy if you do it the right way. The Rubik's Cube has something like 42 quintillion combinations - that's 17 zeros by the way - and yet I can solve it in two or three minutes as I read a book on how to solve it. If you do it the right way it is an easy thing to do.

"And stopping smoking is actually a bit like trying to solve a complicated puzzle too but because Allen Carr has trodden the path and it has been trodden on quite frequently for nearly 40 years, there is an easy way to do it."

The five-hour course begins by slowly exposing the many illusions perpetuated by society that smoking does have some benefits for those who do smoke.

The course then, using nothing more than logic and common sense, goes on to explain how these illusions work and how smokers become convinced they cannot live without their addiction, even at the cost of losing limbs or indeed their lives.

I cannot put my finger on it exactly when the penny dropped for me but during the course it dawned on me how much damage I had been causing to myself and for what benefit? None at all. And it also occurred me that I no longer had any desire to smoke, I felt elated and confident, the exact opposite of my feelings when I tried to quit before.

For anyone reading this who is considering quitting smoking, then Allen Carr’s Easyway method is something I would recommend as it makes the experience of quitting enjoyable and removes the trauma and will-power battles that are required in other methods of quitting.

Mark runs Easyway seminars in Preston and is also branching out to the Blackpool area.
