Kate Garraway nominated for National Television Award

Kate Garraway has been shortlisted for a National Television Award for her documentary on her husband Derek's two-year battle with illness from catching Covid.

A year on from her winning an NTA for the first documentary, Finding Derek, 55-year-old Kate's follow-up documentary has now been nominated in the same category.

Kate's documentaries follow life for her and her family, following her husband Derek Draper - a former political advisor from Chorley who fell seriously ill after contracting the virus in which he spent a year in hospital.

Speaking on GMB on Tuesday, Robert Rinder paid tribute to his colleague who he described as "sunshine in human form".

Kate had told him: "It's the first time I've worked with you, it's so exciting."

Robert said: "You know what, it is! First of all, you are sunshine in human form, and to be alongside a friend.

"We don't really talk about it that much. I just want to say more than anything else, you are a model of the possibility against a backdrop of darkness of being light in every sense.

"Your amazing documentary Caring For Derek is being shortlisted for a National Television Award, and to use the platform you have for change, for authenticity just makes me proud to know you. I'm not gonna cry but I am just very proud."

What did Kate say about being nominated?

A shocked and emotional Kate added: "That's so lovely. I'm gonna cry myself."

Kate also took the moment to praise her fellow nominees in her category, but added she was happy her own documentary was able to "shine some light" on the care system.

Former political advisor Derek is said to be the worst affected living Covid patient in the UK after spending 13 months in hospital.

After months in a coma, Derek faced serious illness due to the impact of the virus on his body including issues with his lungs, his heart and his kidneys.

Recently, Kate confirmed her husband had been rushed back into hospital leading to her taking time off the show and other work commitments.

Kate's husband has required round-the-clock care since he contracted coronavirus in March 2020.

The presenter recently took a leave of absence from GMB after her husband's health took a downturn when he contracted sepsis.

He is now at risk of losing one of his kidneys, although he has been moved out of intensive care and is now in the hospital's high-dependency unit.

Who else is nominated?

Also nominated in the category is Katie Price: What Harvey Did Next, Julia Bradbury: Breast Cancer And Me; and Paddy and Christine McGuinness: Our Family And Autism. The Wanted’s Tom Parker has also been posthumously shortlisted for an NTA in the same category for a documentary about the charity concert in aid of cancer research he organised six months before his death.

When will the awards be held?

The 27th National Television Awards will be hosted by comedian Joel Dommett at London’s OVO Arena Wembley on Thursday, September 15, with the results to be announced live on ITV.
