Award winning Chorley musician returning to his 'Folk Roots' to play gig

An award-winning folk musician from Chorley will return to his hometown this Friday to play a gig at The Little Theatre.

Musician and producer Phillip Henry will perform with the folk-roots supergroup The Gigspanner Big Band.

The band is formed of some of the most high profile musicians on the folk-roots scene, with alumni from legendary Bands Steeleye Span and Bellowhead.

A BBC Radio Two Folk Award winner as part of Edgelarks (with Hannah Martin), he has played widely on the British folk roots circuit, from Glastonbury to Cambridge Folk Festival and is widely regarded as one of the finest guitarists and harmonica players of his generation.

A native of Chorley, he moved to the Devon coast to develop his love of music, playing slide guitars inspired by world music from the Delta blues to Indian classical playing.

After studying Indian slide guitar in Calcutta, he has travelled the world touring from Australia to Canada, Japan to South Africa.

His virtuosic technique is deeply rooted and always returns to the traditional music of the British Isles. His unique beatbox harmonica style never fails to wow audiences wherever he performs.

Phil said: “I’m really looking forward to returning to Chorley and playing in my hometown, and the theatre is just round the corner from my grandma's house.”

He added: "The Little Theatre is a cracking venue, so it will be a great night."
