25 eggscellent photos of Egg Rolling at Preston's Avenham Park this Easter Monday

The historic Easter Monday Egg Rolling event in Preston has returned to the city once again.

Preston’s beloved Easter tradition is back one again with Avenham Park today being transformed into a festival full of fun, creativity and of course lots of eggs!

The first ever Easter egg rolling event took place in Avenham Park in 1867 but back then pace-eggs were used - a Lancashire custom.

Pace-eggs were traditionally decorated by wrapping the eggs in onion skins and boiling them to give the shells a golden mottled effect.

Children would then roll their pace-eggs down the hills and see who could get theirs the furthest without it breaking.

Now-a-days the activity is very much the same but more commonly chocolate ages are used instead - although PETA did this year try to persuade Prestonians to switch to potatoes!

The 2026 event runs until 4pm, having started at 11am, and also features market stalls, performances, workshops and an Easter Bonnet Competition.

Our photographer headed down to capture the fun filled scenes so take a look at 25 photos from the day below...
