Readers' letters - June 14

The EU protects our wildlife habitats (WEP June 11). So say our friends from the Green Party. Unfortunately this didn’t extend to our fish stocks in the seas around the UK, plundered by the influx of trawlers and mother ships from all other members of the EU. So bad has been this devastation that our fish stocks have been unable to recover to the levels that existed when we had our own waters. Fleetwood, Grimsby, Hull and all other fishing ports, once thriving industries and communities, employing many thousands, are driven into obscurity on the orders of the European Commission in Brussels. No protection there!

This is just one example of the power that Brussels wields when it comes to matters they want to impose on member states. We can object to these matters if not in our interests, but can do nothing about it unless we are able to persuade the other 27 member states to vote against it and we have not been able to do this over the last 40 years. When a ‘regulation’ is issued by the European Commission, it is worded as follows: “This regulation shall be binding in its entirety and directly applicable to all member states’’ unquote. So there you have it, like it or not! No compromise. This is how the European Union works.

Regardless of denials, it is clearly stated in the Lisbon Treaty that the ultimate objective of the EU is to form a ‘superstate’ controlled from Brussels with an European army, police force, finance and banking regime. Westminster will become powerless, demoted to become nothing more than a talking-shop translating the orders they receive from Brussels into statutes.

No direct power whatsoever!

If you want to live under such a regime, vote to stay.

If I vote ‘to remain’ – then I shall be supporting all of the following:

n Open borders with the EU continuing forever.

n Live animal exports being allowed to continue.

n Accounts never properly signed off.

n Rule by bureaucrat rather than by elected politicians.

n Subsidising farming of bulls for bullfights.

n An EU whose share of world trade has halved since 1980.

n An EU with taxpayer-costing corruption into billions annually.

n Higher cost of living as we can only sometimes gain access to best world prices.

n The continuing ecological tragedy which is our fishing industry.

n The inability to lend proper help to steel and similar.

n Bossed by Brussels when we all want democracy more locally.

n Third world countries often having their exports so tariff-ridden that they cannot escape poverty by trading.

I think I could easily treble this list. Is this what you want – what you really, really want?

REFERENDUM

I’d prefer immigrants

I was born in 1921 and grew up listening to horror stories about the First World War in the 1920s. Then in the 1930s, there were troubles in Europe. On September 6, 1939, I joined the RAF and served for more than six years, three of those in India and Burma. Worldwide, there were 60,000,000 people killed in the first war and 74,000,000 killed in the second war.

While there is an EU, that will not happen again. I would rather see the immigrants come over than the bombers.
