Who's The Daddy: Doors closing, horizons opening for our two daughters
The only constant in life is change. And things are changing pretty fast for our two grown-and-flown daughters.
Last Friday, me and The Boss helped Daughter #1 lug the remainder of her stuff across Manchester from her top-floor flat in leafy Didsbury to a high rise in the city centre, where she was about to shack up with The Boyfriend for the first time.

Daughter #1 is nothing if not organised. She got the keys to her new place at the start of last week and had been moving a car load of her stuff most nights after work. There was only an office chair, desk, a massive plant and a few odds and sods to sling in the back of our car and then she left the flat keys on the kitchen counter and literally closed the door on one chapter of her life and opened another to the next a few miles across town.
The Boyfriend turned up a couple of hours later with his mum and dad in a big van with all his stuff in, and between the six of us we formed a human chain between it, the main entrance to the building, the lift from the ground floor to the eighth and their new front door. Teamwork, eh?
Then all that was left to do was for the happy couple to work out how it was all going to fit. Judging by the pics on the family WhatsApp later that evening, it looks like they managed it - with the addition of a natty drinks trolley.
Not to be outdone, Daughter #2 FaceTimed us during the move from the world’s biggest cruise ship she works on in the Caribbean to tell us her next contract will be out of Southampton and around Europe from May until August.
So she’s swapping Miami, Mexico and Honduras for Spain, Portugal, Denmark, France, Germany and the fjords of Norway. Nice work if you can get it.
She’s due home in just over a week, but told us on Tuesday they’d just raised $15,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in an auction, where two guests got into a bidding war to blow the ship’s horn - so they called it a draw and let them both have a toot, for $4,000 each.
We literally cannot wait to pick up Daughter #2 from the airport later this month, and despite having access to the finest restaurants on the high seas for the last five months, can you guess what she’s requested on her first day back? Yep, a chippy tea. There’s no plaice like home. Ho ho.
