City centre traffic was disrupted after a large hole appeared in the surface of Butler Street, Preston this afternoon.

Workmen were forced to cordon off part of the carriageway between the Fishergate Shopping Centre and the city’s railway station.

A highways spokesperson at nearby County Hall said: “We’re not sure why the hole has suddenly appeared, but we are looking into it.

“We have had to put cones and tape around it, partially obstructing the road.”

The hole, around two feet in diameter, appeared on the carriageway nearest to the shopping centre, affecting traffic turning into Butler Street from Fishergate.
