'˜No easy ride' as new homes plan refused

Developers should not expect an easy ride pushing through new homes schemes in a market town.

That is the warning from one councillor after proposals for 130 homes in Poulton were thrown out.

Planning inspectors are now likely to decide on the proposals by Hollins Homes for a site off Holts Lane.

But Coun Alf Clempson insists anyone wanting to build more houses must prove their plans will not make the town’s roads less safe before putting forward proposals.

He believes roads around the town cannot take the strain of rapid expansion.

Coun Clempson said: “There has been a fatal accident in this area recently. The risk here is heightened due to the proximity of the very busy Tesco Express and the traffic going through the town at excessive speeds,

“I have highlighted this many times and asked for a crossing which has been refused.”

Coun Clempson said Holts Lane itself was unsuitable for such a major scheme.

He said: “Holts Lane itself is a narrow road. There are serious issues with the state of pavements with many elderly residents having to walk on the road. There is a sense of disbelief this application was submitted.”

Coun Clempson hopes developers in the future will speak to residents and councillors before rushing into plans. He said: “Developers will always see the financial benefits of building in Poulton, While major routes can be improved, the narrow already congested roads in Poulton cannot.

“To keep building on them is at best short-sighted. Development must not add risk.”
