NHS dentist appointments for children opened up at this Leyland surgery

The surgery is working with local schools to encourage positive oral health habits from an early age.

A Leyland dental surgery has opened up NHS places for children under the age of 16.

Seventy One Dental in Towngate has an initiative to help local children access NHS dental care, having seen first-hand how difficult many families are finding it to access routine dental appointments for their children. In some cases, children have gone years without seeing a dentist, meaning opportunities to prevent problems early can be missed.

In response, their team has been in contact with local schools, nurseries and community groups to help connect families with NHS dental check-ups for children aged 16 and under who are not currently registered with a dentist.

They say their focus is on helping families establish long-term dental care and encouraging positive oral health habits from an early age.

To support this initiative, they have set aside multiple dedicated days focused specifically on children's appointments.

Bethan Oakes, Practice Manager at Seventy One Dental, said:"We know many parents and carers have struggled to find an NHS dentist for their children, and we want local families to know that support is available. The earlier children are introduced to positive dental habits and routine care, the better their long-term oral health outcomes are likely to be."

Dr Assim Ghaffoor, Principal Dentist at Seventy One Dental, added:"Dental care is about prevention as much as treatment. Regular check-ups allow us to identify any concerns early, provide advice to families and help children build confidence when visiting the dentist. Our goal is to support children throughout their dental journey, not just when a problem arises."

Dr Sarah Casey, Dentist at Seventy One Dental, added:"Every child deserves access to routine dental care, and we're proud to be playing a small part in helping local families access that support."

Miss Abi Alty, Dental Nurse & NHS care coordinator, added: "As a team, we've made children's dental care a priority by setting aside dedicated appointment days to help as many local families as possible access care. We appreciate the support of local schools in enabling children to attend these important healthcare appointments.”
