Heavy rainfall followed by gales has been predicted for tonight, possibly lasting through the weekend.

The Met Office said Storm Gertrude was expected to bring rain spreading from the west during Thursday, gradually turning heavier and more persistent. The heaviest rainfall will be over high ground, initially across western Scotland, then developing across North West England and Wales during Thursday afternoon and evening.

It said there is potential for further localised flooding and disruption to travel.
