New Preston bus users group calls for the transport service to become publicly owned
The group, supported by Preston City Council and other local organisations, aims to give users a direct say in improving bus services
Preston residents are joining forces to launch a new passenger led group aimed at fixing local bus networks.
The group is being formed, with the support of Preston City Council and other local organisations, for users of bus services in the area.
It’s open to all bus users in Preston, and seeks to connect users to the people and organisations in charge of the services.
A small organising group has met and decided to hold a public meeting on September 9, at the Town Hall, but travellers can also attend online.

The group will be led by users, and could get involved at all levels, from reporting issues with timetables and bus stops to influencing policy.
It will also seek to increase use of bus services across the city by improving the quality of services and awareness of bus options. The public meeting will shape the priorities and strategy for the group as it begins.
Alicia Cartwright, a disabled mature student who is part of the team organising the event, said: “It is so important to make sure that people have their voices heard about services that they use every day.
“Buses are a vital part of the lives of many of the people who live, work and study in this city, and this group gives local passengers a direct seat at the table to build a public transport system that actually works for our community.
“We know that the best way to improve services is to include the people who actually use them, because we are the people who know what is needed.

“We also want to hear from people who would love to use buses more but can’t, so we can work out how to make things better.”
Morgan Duffy, a young person from the area, who is also involved in organising the event, said “Public transport is many people’s only option to get around in their day to day lives. It is important that they are able to voice their concerns and suggestions”
Included in the 24 recommendations are: Recognising the need to reduce carbon emissions from vehicles, was an appeal for an app; providing comprehensive real-time information on bus services; improved and better maintained bus stops; alongside a proposal for public ownership to ensure sustainable bus services are cheaper and more reliable for all.
Members of the public who use buses are invited to the upcoming meeting at Preston Town Hall, starting at 6.30pm .
