Morecambe woman's poppy armband pledge

Youth football players in Morecambe and Lancaster will be sporting poppy armbands in matches this Remembrance weekend thanks to a local business woman.

Jeanette Morgan, who owns a shop in Morecambe and is a tailor, has so far had requests for up to 1200 armbands by managers of local youth teams.

Jeanette said: “Me and my husband have been involved with the Lancaster and Morecambe Service to Youth league for five years. Based on FIFA’s controversial ruling that England and Scotland teams should not wear poppies in the World Cup qualifier, I thought ‘I’ll put the poppies on armbands’. I used the British Legion poppies and stuck them on. When the managers pick them up, I ask for a 50p donation per poppy. Respect is something we should impress on our kids.

“I’ve got two sons serving out in Cyprus so it’s something close to my heart. My dad was a serviceman as well.

“Everybody is touched by war. I can’t believe how it has taken off, I’ve had really good support.”

Proceeds from the poppy armbands will go to the Royal British Legion, which could amount to £600.
