The smash, which happened at around 3am between Broughton and Galgate, shut the motorway on both carriageways for a time.

Lengthy queues built up approaching rush hour even though police were able to open the slow lane and hard shoulder in both directions.

The wagon and trailer were travelling south when they careered through the barrier near Bilsborrow.

By 8am tailbacks had formed stretching back several miles both north and south.

It is not thought there were any injuries. Work was going on to recover the lorry and repair the central barrier.

The delays followed two vehicle fires on Wednesday and Thursday further north on the M6 which also caused severe hold-ups.
