And the internationally renowned artist - who is a professor of contemporary art at the University of Central Lancashire - gave her approval to the reopening following a visit this week.

The exhibition, expected to be one of the most popular attractions for the city centre gallery, is scheduled to remain in Preston until Sunday, June 3.

Council bosses said the severe weather last month had taken its toll on the roof at the Grade I listed Harris building, resulting in a small leak.

Coun Peter Kelly, cabinet member for culture and leisure, had previously said: “We are extremely grateful to Lubaina Himid for her understanding in this unfortunate situation.

This week the city council is expected to formally accept a grant of £900,000 from Arts Council England for the Harris Museum.

It will provide £225k per year until 2022.
