Mark Schloba attacked his girlfriend of four years after they rowed as they downed lager and Jagermeister chasers after a £1,200 win.

Leeds Crown Court heard the couple fell out after Schloba admitted to his partner that he was still nor divorced from his wife - two months before they were due to get married.

Simon Waley, prosecuting, said Scholba dialled 999 at 5pm on April 23 to ask for help for his partner after he had “slapped her around a bit.”

Mr Waley said arguing could be heard in the background as the call was made.

Emergency services were called to the house in Whinmoor, Leeds, and it was clear Schloba and the victim were “worse the wear” for alcohol.

The woman was taken to hospital after suffering a fractured cheek bone and eye socket.

Mr Waley said the woman may require surgery to have a metal plate fitted to her face but the full extent of her injuries were unclear as she did not wish to co-operate with the prosecution.

After being arrested Schloba told police the couple had a disagreement as he was still not divorced from his wife.

Schloba, of Grimethorpe Street, Headingley, admitted full responsibility for the attack. He pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Richard Reed, mitigating, said: “They were due to be married in June last year. The argument happened when they had drunk heavily after they had a bingo win.”

Mr Reed said Schloba had no previous convictions and described the attack as an isolated incident.

He said Schloba had not been in contact with the victim but still wanted to marry her.

The lawyer added: “If she is not interested he will move on and get on with his life.”

Recorder Andrew Haslam told Schloba: “I do not like men who hit woman and these courts do not like men who hit woman, whether you were in drink or not.

“The fact that you were in drink makes things even worse.”

Schloba was given a 15 month prison sentence, suspended for two years. He was also ordered to do 150 hours unpaid work and take part in a 50-day rehabilitation requirement which includes completing a “building better relationships” programme.
