Local residents in Blackburn and Darwen have been advised to close any windows and doors due the "significant smoke plume."

Shaun Walton, group manager at Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, says the fire was "most probably" started by youths who started a campfire.

He said: "Egerton wildfire most probably caused by neglectful and reckless actions by youths with campfire located at origin.

"Disappointing to find a camping shelter and other paraphernalia on scene as well."

Supermarket bags and beer can also be seen strewn on the ground.

Fire crews have confirmed they are using off road vehicles to get the fire under control, and the affected area has now been reduced to approximately 100m.

Road closures remain in place on the A666 and people are asked to avoid the area.

"Suppression burn teams along with external water supplies are being used to manage the perimeter of the fire.

"Given the nature of the forestation involved firefighters are dealing with a challenging fire and are likely to be in attendance for several hours yet in order to extinguish the fire and damp down hotspots."

The Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service drone has also been used to assist with tactical plans and ensure firefighter safety.

Firefighters are also working in close partnership with United Utilities to help ensure nearby conservation sites are protected.

There are currently no reports of any injuries.
