Kind-hearted Elli scoops countytitle for her money-raising spree

Elli Westwood, from Cottam, was presented with the crown after raising more than £1,000 for Variety, the Children’s Charity.

Elli’s fund-raising efforts included a sponsored 5K Avenham Park run, followed by a cycle ride of the Guild Wheel and a cake sale.

The Ashton High School pupil organised the events after being shortlisted for the finals of the Miss Lancashire Beauty Contest, held in Blackpool.

Elli, 14, said: “I really enjoy the fund-raising. While its fun to be part of the beauty competition, I like setting myself a challenge and to see how much the money helps makes it so worthwhile. It’s a really good experience and I’ve made quite a few friends.”

It is the second year running the teenager has taken part in the regional beauty pageant. Last year she raised £600 for Variety, who provide specialist equipment, grants and days out for disabled youngsters and their families.

She is now readying herself for the Miss Junior Preston competition on Sunday, April 17 at the Preston Playhouse Theatre. So far she has taken part in a sponsored silence and has given up fizzy drinks in an effort to raise more money.

Elli’s mum Louise, who joined 15 other friends and family to support her at the Miss Lancashire event, held at The Sands Hotel in Blackpool, said: “She has been really determined in her efforts and done everything off her own back, phone calls and emails.

“She’s worked so hard.”
